What Florida requires

  1. Florida titles vessels

    A vessel that isn't exempt from titling must be titled at the same time it is registered, so a jet ski changing hands needs the Florida title signed over to the buyer.

  2. Buyer: 30 days to title and register

    A purchaser of a new or used vessel has 30 days to title and register it. During that window, keep proof of the purchase date aboard the ski — your bill of sale is that proof.

  3. Operating late is a criminal offence

    Operating an unregistered vessel after the 30 days is a second-degree misdemeanour in Florida, not just a fee.

  4. Seller: file the notice of sale

    Form HSMV 82050 covers notice of sale and bill of sale for a vessel as well as a vehicle. Filing it removes the ski from your registration and helps you avoid civil liability for what happens next.

  5. Notarization: not required

    Florida does not require a vessel bill of sale to be notarized, though the department suggests notarizing for extra protection.

Worth knowing

  • The trailer is separate. A trailer carrying the ski is titled or registered in its own right, so sign it over too if it's part of the deal.
  • Check the hull ID against the title before paying. It's moulded into the rear of the hull, usually on the starboard side.
  • Boating safety education rules apply to operators in Florida. They're administered by the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, so check myfwc.com for who needs a card.
  • Keep proof of the purchase date on board until the registration comes through, since that's what you show if you're stopped in the first 30 days.
